About Te Kaha

Te Kaha Beach Resort is actually built on the site of the historic Te Kaha Hotel

Te Kaha is a small town located on the East Cape of the North Island of New Zealand. The East Cape is New Zealand at its finest – secluded and pristine bays await you here, a coastline of tranquil coves fringed with ancient Pohutukawa trees, soft sand, safe swimming and abundant marine life.

Te Kaha is 1.5 hours drive-time from the gateway of Whakatane. The journey from Whakatane will take you through some of New Zealand’s least-seen and most unique landscapes, including the mighty Motu River and many tiny coastal settlements which seem like a frozen snap shot in time.

Up until the early 1920’s, whaling was an integral part of life in Te Kaha. The local Maori iwi (tribe) had their own Whaling business and used to row out from shore in pursuit of migrating whales.

Te Kaha Beach Resort is actually built on the site of the historic Te Kaha Hotel – a public bar and accommodation which provided good food, good lodgings and a great welcoming atmosphere for decades of travellers.
